ALL the supermarkets put the screw on their food suppliers the whole time.
And not just "supermarkets" but also M&S, etc.

For instance, if any M&S customer has cause to complain about any
product, then obviously the complaint is escalated back to the
manufacturer/supplier/im****ter, whatever.  That's fair enough.  However,
for each and every complaint, even when it turns out to be entirely
spurious and not well-founded in the slightest, the supplier is "charged"
a GBP25 "handling fee"; as in the case of the woman who complained that
her /parrot/ did not like the packet of nuts she'd bought for it from
M&S: there was absolutely nothing wrong with the nuts, passed all health
checks, and were perfectly suited for /human/ consumption --- her parrot
just happened to have been faddy about his food that day.

At least the other retailers have the good grace to refund any such fee
if the supplier can demonstrate that the goods are perfect.
