The lack of demand for Spanish olive oil may still be connected to the
cooking oil scandal of the early 1980s, in which over 1000 people died
and 25,000 were seriously injured.  

Of course it is now known that the "toxic oil syndrome" did not exist,
and that the illness was caused by organo-phosphate pesticide residue
on tomatoes, nevertheless the official line in Spain (and even the
World Health Organisation) is that the oil was to blame.
