I very much agree with MBWA "management by walking around". I feel
I'm good at systems and kind of like figuring out system puzzles. For
example, in running pizza delivery, you want to reduce the time from
when the customer first picks up the phone to when the pizza arrives
at his or her door. You might pre-cook the crust like California
Pizza Kitchen does successfully (and also drop the affectation of the
wood-fired oven). You might also look at this puzzle as when the
customer first gets an inkling for a pizza . . . so maybe put an
old PC next to the phone, and it pings when you get an email.
Now, the part about the restrooms. One idea I have is that if you
clean a restroom, you get a $15 bonus for that pay period in addition
to your hourly rate, and you can only do this a maximum of two times a
week. The goal being that the people who don't really mind doing it,
without pressuring people who would really mind. And the caste system
where only the bus person cleans the bathroooms, where it's
technically assigned and technically monitored but not really, I find
this just stupid and bad management.
And I'm never going to promise a progressive workplace. I will fire
people. I'm just going to strive to be halfway decent about the whole
thing. More later.
