On Saturday I was in McDonalds in Hayes town centre. There we
purchased a medium milkshake - clearly stated as being for taking out
- and expected to pay 98p.
However the woman on the till refused to ring up the take out price
and charged us =A31.19 which was the eat in price. I have the receipt.
Now for many years milkshakes have been VAT exempt - even though
McDonalds always charged the higer price by default (=A31.19) unless
specifically requested to make it a take out item. Most customers did
not realise that take out milkshakes were actually cheaper. This fact
was only displayed in small print on the menus.
However now it apears that McDonalds is charging the higher price
regardless. Therefore is McDonalds breaking the UK law by now charging
VAT for takeout milkshakes? The VAT exempt clause has been taken off
the menus so I suspect that this is a national policy.
The same situation pertains to ice creams.
