When I was a small boy at 7 years of age and living in the Charleston,
South
Carolina area, my father took me to the 1983 Division 1-AA National
Football
Champion****p Game at Johnson Hagood Stadium. The stadium is on the campus
of The Citadel, which is the military college of South Carolina. They
were
hosting the champion****p game that year between Western Carolina
University
and Southern Illinois University. Southern Illinois won the game 43 to 7
and, after the game, SIU students attempted to storm the field and tear
down
the goalposts. However, their attempt was unsuccessful, as the goalposts
were guarded by a small number of Citadel Cadets. While small in number,
the cadets posed such an intimidating presence that the SIU students
ceased
their mission to tear down the goalposts.
While they weren't technically "the visiting team," their attempt to
destroy
property on a field that was not their own was met with much drama.
