Cancer Agent Found in Korean Turtles
The carcinogenic dye Malachite Green has been detected in domestic
freshwater fish. The cancer agent caused a scare in July when it was
found in aquaculture im****ts from China. Authorities have halted all
****pments from fish farms where the chemical was detected and will step
up checks of fish farms nationwide.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in an emergency briefing
on Thursday said inspections of 65 trout farms and two carp farms from
Sept. 15 to Oct. 3 found that products raised in 36 fish farms
contained the carcinogen.
Malachite Green is an industrial dye also used to prevent mold and germ
infections in fish. Although not on the list of carcinogens drawn up by
International Agency for Research on Cancer, its use in raising fish
was banned worldwide in the early 1990s after it was found to cause
cancer.
