Obit~Harry Lee Mercantel, born~Mamou,Louisiana
Harry Lee Mercantel, 83, of Friendswood, Texas, beloved husband,
brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather went to join the
Lord Jesus Christ on April 13, 2006.
He was born July 30, 1922 in Mamou, Louisiana. Harry leaves a legacy of
integrity and honor to all who knew him. He will always be remembered by
his sense of humor, love of life, and his Cajun gumbo. He loved and
valued spending time with his family and friends. Harry entered the
United States Coast Guard in December of 1941 and served as an American
Merchant Marine during WWII. He married the love of his life, Hilda
(Benoit) Mercantel on May 20, 1943. He worked as a Manager of Operations
for Monsanto Chemical in Texas City, Texas. Harry was a member of Mary
Queen Catholic Church in Friendswood, Texas, the Grand Knight of the
Knights of Columbus Council # 5236 in La Marque, Texas, a member of the
Friendswood Knights of Columbus Council #8494, and Elks Lodge B.P.O.E.
in La Marque, Texas.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Hilda (Benoit) Mercantel
of Gueydan, Louisiana; daughters, Nancy Colby and husband Frank, Jr. of
Lafayette, Louisiana, Donna Montgomery of Houston, Texas, and Sheri
McGavern of Friendswood, Texas; son, Steve Mercantel and wife Karen of
Mont Bellview, Texas; brother, Jerry Mercantel of Mamou, Louisiana;
sisters, Vertie Katrausky of Temple, Texas, and Geraldine Mercantel of
Eunice, Louisiana; grandchildren, Craig Taylor, Mason Colby, Tanner
Colby, Brandon Little, Megan McGavern, Stephen Mercantel, Nick
Mercantel, and Robbie Mercantel; great-grandchildren, Kathryn Taylor,
August Colby, and Magdalena Colby; and devoted friends, Jim McGavern and
Kurt Vollers.
Harry's family would like to thank the staff at Methodist Hospital for
their exceptional care.
The visitation will be held Sunday, April 16, 2006, from 5 p.m. to 7
p.m. at Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, 311 N. Friendswood Drive,
Friendswood, TX 77546 (281) 992-7200 with a Vigil Service to begin at 7
p.m. The funeral mass will be held Monday, April 17, 2006, at 11 a.m. at
Mary Queen Catholic Church, 606 Cedarwood, Friendswood, TX 77546 with
Father Phil "Skip" Negley, M.S. officiating. Burial will follow at Grace
Memorial Park Cemetery in Santa Fe, TX.

this cemetery, where my family has been laid to rest...about half
way between houston and galveston. when daddy bought here, he said, "he
wanted to be sure to not float away (as happens in galveston, same as at
home in louisiana)
because, daddy'd had worked on the water through-out his life......
