Dave, hope the trip with your son turned out great for both of you.
This has been going on for a while in your absence. I frequent a
couple of other newsgroups, and it has been a hot topic as to why
Verizon and others unceremoniously dropped newsgroups. It certainly
isn't for the reasons they quote.
Here's the contributions from this group:

Slip on down to about entry number 20 and read Nunya's (MartyB)
explanation of exactly what is going on. It is accurate, incisive and
truthful.
None of those clowns give a fig about the kids unless it is going to
affect them, but they always care about the bottom line.
To amplify what Marty says, it is probably, literally, incalculable to
determine the number of hours (translated into years) of bandwidth
this will save them so they can continue to provide mediocre service
with an outdated network. And few people actually realize that in the
alt.* realms, you can find newgroups that allow you to download whole
movies (any type), music, TV, etc.
The smallest bandwidth is used by the binaries folks. The smallest is
the text only, like this group. The whole archive would fit on a
DVD. This is nothing.
But hey.... couched in the righteous flag of "it's all about the
children", they were able to establish a tenable position for taking
away service. I mean really, who doesn't want to protect children?
Bull****. It had nothing to do with them at all.
As you noted, you have a teranews acct now. I hope you let us know
how that works out.
Robert
