Believe me.... when all you smell is the oak/mesquite mix smoke in the
air, the smell of the meat on the fire (they do cook anticuchos as
well) and the aroma of the chewy white yeast rolls heating up when you
walk up to buy your ticket, you think you are in heaven.
There is a lot of sauerkraut, tons of mustard, lots of pickled japs
(escabeche style), pico de gallo, etc.
At one end, they have the German strudels, pies, and some traditional
German potato salad (how can you go wrong with warm potatoes with
bacon vinegarette dressing?) and other goodies.
I think there is a booth or two that will sell brisket tacos and
sandwiches.
Sausages are beef, ****k, or a mix. No non-traditional herbs, no
turkey or chicken, no fancy cheeses, nothing. It is like cooking at
your own house for yourself.
Last year was bigger than it had ever been, and I think they sold
something like 100 TONS of sausage. That doesn't include a likely
20,000 turkey legs, and all manner of other things.
And the beer. It takes just a couple of minutes so get to the beer.
You buy coupons at one of a hundred booths, not waiting, and you walk
up and hand the guy a ticket and he hands you a beer.
There used to be an area where you could get special stuff that was on
tap, but I don't know if they still do that.

Our one true Italian deli closed here, so we don't have any more
traditional, hand made stuff unless it comes from one of the smaller
butcher shops. Hard to find here, and I miss it because I love that
hotter sausage with a good dose of sage or fennel.

Here, too. When you are in New Braunfels you can get it at a couple
of restaurants and at a couple of meat markets. But it isn't readily
available, and I wouldn't even know where to look in San Antonio.
Now you got me thinking. I may have to step out and get myself a
package of Opa's or Meyer's for tomorrow. Some warm potato salad,
some ****ner Black Label.... mmmmmmm......
