If its faster relief you want, you might try what we've been doing
with an astoni****ng degree of success:  good old-fa****oned iodine.
That's right. You take that out of the medicine chest along with the
smallest band-aid in the box; unpackage that and lay the strip on the
counter. Dip a Q-tip into the 2% tincture of iodine and dab it on the
pad till it's completely saturated, then tightly apply it to the
chigger bite.

That dirty little bugger will be dead, and the infection will be cured
while the killing action goes on, within 20-30 minutes. The itching is
over.

WARNING: That skull and crossbones on the iodine bottle is not there
for nothing. Within about a minute you will start to feel the sting,
and it will not let up, but only increase quite uncomfortably. If you
leave the band-aid on too long, the corrosive action of the iodine
will burn the skin and you can wind up with a scar. You will get a
skin stain that may require a week or so to wear off. But then so does
the chigger scar last at least that long so . . .

I would strongly recommend against treating more than two or three
bites at a time, because the iodine decidedly gets absorbed by the
skin to enter the lymphatic system if not the blood stream.  This is
shown by the interesting fact that the dark brown stain of iodine on
the pad, after the 20 minutes, has faded to a light amber or yellow.

Before fixing on this cure, we tried alcohol, tobacco and chili juice,
Lavoris (cinnamon anticeptic mouthwash) and bleach.  The bleach works
but if you forget and leave it on, like overnight, as I did with a
bite on my butt, you'll get a burn that will become infected and
inflamed worse than an army of chiggers can do.

Try the iodine, but be careful and remember the WARNING. It's deadly
poison.
