Applesauce Squares

1/2 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup applesauce
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup walnuts -- chopped
9 Walnut halves for garnish
Preheat oven to 350º F.
In large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until creamy.
Stir in egg, than applesauce.
Blend in reminding ingredients except walnut halves.
Spread mixture into an 8" square non stick baking dish.
Place walnut halves on top of dough.
Bake for 40 minutes, or until firm to the touch.
Cool in pan. Cut into nine squares.
