The garage door faceth South. However, Goddard's Folly sits near the top
of the North face of the Calder Valley, which runs roughly East/West (or
vice-versa). Any weather coming in from a westerly or southerly
direction gets channelled straight at our little terrace of houses. Now,
since we are at a height of 522 ft above the floor of the valley
(according to Google Earth), we can ignore anything MetCheck says about
wind speeds 'cos they refer to a height of 1 (or 2?) metres above ground
level. So we do get some seriously wet and windy weather here, attacking
the garage from both the back (where the door is) and the West side
(where it soaks into the stonework and travels in all directions).

That's not the problem. The point is that the rain hits the stonework
above the doors, soaks in and drips off the lintel behind the doors. The
new doors have been installed further out than the originals. Also, I
suspect the original wooden subframe helped point the water in the right
direction, but now that's gone. There is a damp-proof membrane isolating
the stonework fascia and surround from the side walls (which is a Good
Thing), but there's nothing to channel water to the outside. I reckon it
needs a strip of fla****ng or similar stuff, possibly even aluminium
sheet (bent up on the inside and down on the outside) to keep the water
out.

There is also still some water getting under the door from outside, but
that was expected and will be dealt with by installing a rubber sealing
strip on the floor. However, this has to wait until the Council has
repaired the adjacent broken pavement so that we have a reasonably level
surface to work up to. They promised it would definitely be done before
Christmas. Ho hum...

Likewise. I've had to deal with so many of these buggers over the past
couple of years, it's just ridiculous. Mind you, there were a couple of
good guys as well; the boiler man and the kitchen man. But as for the
roofing and guttering men; the drain man; the window cleaner; the
plumber; and, of course, the surveyor...
