I recently got round to replacing the rear drum bearing on the rumble
dryer,
which I've had for 18 months not bothering to replace it then (I forgot
until
I had it nearly back together).

A couple of months ago it started to make a bang-bang-bump noise every
revolution of the drum, so I stripped it down, found nothing amiss and
reassembled with the new bearing. It was considerably quieter. That was
until
last Friday, I was summonsed to listen to an even louder bang-bang-bump,
and
said, it can't be anything serious, or I would have found it last time. 

Ten minutes later I was told the noise had stopped, and investigated, the
machine was whirring, but the drum was still. 

Dismantling revealed the rear bearing mounting (a 3 legged spider about 4
inches across) had two broken legs, and the belt was snapped. For some
unknown reason the drum rotated more freely than it had for years.

A heap of bits is now piled beside the back door waiting to be trans****ted
to
the local 'recycling centre' (13 miles away, not very local, and they
charge
£10 to collect. Another heap of bits adorn the futility room worktop,
saved
for posterity^W spares for the new machine. 

I'm having to stay in (well I haven't anyway) to take a call re delivery
of a
new machine, virtually the identical model but 14 years newer, the only
differences seem to be cosmetic (no doubt to make it cheaper to produce).

I suppose I'll have to install it when it arrives. It's a gas one and will
need the hose transferring, not a major job, as long as I can find the
tools.
I might find time on christmas day if I can find my way through all the
steaming wa****ng on the line on the landing.

I wonder how on earth I managed not to see the cracks in the spider when I
changed the bearing. I know my eyes are going, but I don't think they are
that bad yet!
